U.S. Sanctions Against Venezuela Denounced by Latin American Leaders

This week President Barack Obama issued an executive order placing sanctions on seven Venezuelan officials for alleged human rights violations against opposition protesters since February 2014. His order will freeze the officials' assets and block their entry to the U.S. Several Latin American leaders have denounced the move with the Maduro government responding by demanding that the U.S. embassy in Venezuela reduce its staff by 80%. U.S. citizens are now also obligated to apply for visas before entering Venezuela. Miguel Tinker Salas, professor of Latin American history at Pomona College, explains why diplomatic relations between the two countries are deteriorating.
