On 13 March 2014, The South African Civil Society Information Service and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) South Africa Office co-hosted a panel discussion, 'Beyond Nationalisation', which interrogated how South Africa's mineral resources could be exploited to bring greater benefit to more South Africans.
The discussion was opened by Renate Tenbusch, the Resident Director of the FES South Africa Office and facilitated by Fazila Farouk, Executive Director of SACSIS.
Panelists Ronnie Kasrils, Duma Gqubule and Neil Coleman engaged in a discussion, which tracked the history of South Africa's economic policy decisions, international best practice in nationalisation as well as the issue of strategic state ownership and economic transformation.

Ronnie Kasrils
Ronnie Kasrils was Minister of Intelligence Services from 27 April 2004 to 25 September 2008. He was a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1987 to 2007 as well as a member of the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party (SACP) from December 1986 to 2007. Duma Gqubule
Duma Gqubule Is founder and director of KIO Advisory Services. He has an MA degree in economics from Aberdeen University in Scotland. He was co-author of the landmark BEE Commission report, which was presented to former president Thabo Mbeki in 2001 and paved the way for the country’s current B-BBEE laws and policies. He is editor of a book: “Making Mistakes Righting Wrongs: Insights into BEE” and has served as a member of the Congress of South African Trade Unions Panel of Progressive economists. Neil Coleman
Neil Coleman has been involved at a senior level for many years in policy development work. Neil has worked for Cosatu for 24 years in various position. He is currently strategies coordinator of the Cosatu secretariat. This involves coordinating various teams of experts for the federation, including working with the country’s top progressive economists.
