Ebrahim Hewitt, senior editor of the Middle East Monitor, has been writing letters to the editors of major western newspapers since 2009. His letters, which are a response to what newspapers publish about Israel’s 65-year occupation of Palestine, remained largely unpublished until recently when he was encouraged to compile them into a book form.
In this Frontline Club panel discussion, Hewitt’s book, Memo to the Editor, is used as a vehicle for a broader discussion of how the media reports on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Journalists from the Guardian newspaper and BBC join him on the panel where it becomes clear that the Israel lobby puts a great deal of pressure on journalists and editors in the West.
The Panel
Mark McDonald (panel chair), a human rights barrister and the director and principle founder of the London Innocence Project.
Ibrahim Hewitt, senior editor for the Middle East Monitor.
Tim Llewellyn, former BBC Middle East Correspondent.
David Hearst, foreign leader writer for the Guardian.
